Understanding Commercial Pipe Standards & Nominal Dimensions

A foundational principle of mechanical engineering is that Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) and Nominal Diameter (DN) do not equal the actual internal bore. Hydraulic flow calculations must always be executed using verified inner diameters (ID).

Schedule Differences (e.g. Steel Sch 40 vs Sch 80)

For carbon steel pipe per ASME B36.10M, the outside diameter is fixed for a given nominal size (e.g., 2" pipe always has OD = 60.3 mm). However, Schedule 80 heavy-wall pipe has a thicker wall (5.54 mm vs 3.91 mm in Sch 40), shrinking the internal diameter from 52.5 mm down to 49.3 mm and increasing flow velocity by over 13% for identical flow rates.

European vs American Copper Sizing

European plumbing utilizes outside diameter designation (e.g. 15mm, 22mm, 28mm per BS EN 1057 Table X), whereas North American plumbing utilizes Nominal Pipe Size (1/2", 3/4", 1" per ASTM B88). Our database includes verified dimensions for both international standards.
